Flourishing in ambiguity

WHY READ THIS

Insights and advice to help leaders navigate and productively engage with uncertainty.

IN BRIEF
Modern times are turbulent, with factors such as pandemics and conflicts causing supply chain disruptions. Predicting the future is challenging due to the highly interconnected business environment. By embracing ambiguity, leaders can explore new possibilities, adapt to changes, and ultimately make more informed and flexible decisions.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Shifting from "decide to act" to "act to decide". This involves small, exploratory actions to gather insights and develop options. As leaders' understanding improves, some options will become less viable, while others will crystallise, becoming the next logical steps. When the obvious choice emerges, leaders can decide and commit.

  • Becoming comfortable with ambiguity. The unknown makes many leaders uncomfortable, causing them to seek a sense of certainty, even when the best course of action is unclear. However, deciding to act based on incomplete information often yields poor results. Acting to decide requires leaders to have the courage and awareness to recognise when to pivot.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Leaders need to understand that decision-making in uncertain times is a continuous process. The ability to read the landscape, embrace ambiguity, and know when to pivot will lead to success.
